Retropost: Rulo’s Flower
It’s finally happened, I have a Necropost! Or Retropost as I’ve settled on, at least for now. What’s a Retropost? It’s a post or writing that was originally posted elsewhere, or written prior to having somewhere to post.
Our inaugural Retropost was originally posted on Instagram in June of 2020. It recounts a pet-related poignant moment that has since turned into an annual tradition. It’s the beginning of a sad time of year here at Junk Drawer Manor, chronicled in part in this post, Bittersweet Day.
On to the Retropost, and documentation of the subsequent annual tradition.
It’s a poignant time of year, coming up on a year since we said goodbye to Rulo. There’s a Tiger Lily outside our building that blooms by third week of June, and it happens to be in one of Rulo’s preferred pee spots.
Every year since we moved here I always laughed as he tried to pee on it (I wouldn’t let him). Last year, knowing that the end was near, I finally let him pee on it and have since called it Rulo’s flower.

When I took this picture I wondered if I would be sad when Rulo’s flower bloomed this year. All week I’ve been on the lookout and it finally bloomed today. Frieda ran over to the area. No peeing, but definitely looking for anything edible!

We’re still sad without our funny little Chiwiener, but Frieda more than fills the void.
Each year as June rolls around I look forward to Rulo’s flower. It’s become a tradition to take a picture of Frieda with it, like a sad family vacation shot. She dutifully lets me photograph her, sitting with “are we there yet?” energy, knowing she’ll get a treat.
Behold our Rulo’s Flower documentation…
